I am always trying new supplements and health devices because I love them. A lot of the things I try I don’t end up thinking are right for me, but I recently bought a hydrogen water bottle, and I absolutely love it.
I wanted to pass on some details of these devices and why you should consider buying one sooner rather than later. I actually bought two different options, which I’ll link below. I like one better than the other in a few ways, but both are great, and I’ll go into a little more detail about it once I cover the benefits of hydrogen water in general.
What is Hydrogen Water?
Hydrogen water is one of the newest wellness trends, and there are possible benefits to adding hydrogen to the water you drink.
Hydrogen water is just regular old water, but it has extra hydrogen molecules added. Hydrogen is tasteless and odorless, and it’s a non-toxic gas. Hydrogen bonds to other elements, and regular water has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The addition of additional hydrogen may create more health benefits.
You also might not be able to effectively absorb the hydrogen in regular water as well, because it’s bound to oxygen.
When you add hydrogen to your water, the theory is that those molecules are free, so your body can use them.
There are a few ways you can get hydrogen water. There are several companies that sell packs of it which come in pouches or cans, but these are expensive. There are also tablets you can add to your water, or you can buy a pricey machine to hydrogenate your water.
My pick is the hydrogen water bottle. You can reuse it time and time again, and you can actually watch the machine making hydrogen.
Before going into the specifics of the hydrogen water bottle, below are some of the specific possible benefits of adding hydrogen to your water.
Hydrogen Water Benefits
The following are some of the research-backed benefits of hydrogen water.
Anti-Inflammation
There have been a number of studies that have found the administration of either hydrogen water or hydrogen gas can significantly reduce inflammation. For example, in one study of healthy adults, the use of hydrogen water lowered inflammatory responses, and inflammatory signaling was significantly down-regulated.
This is likely because of the antioxidant capabilities of hydrogen water.
Free radicals are molecules that create oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to disease and inflammation.
Hydrogen can fight free radicals to deliver protection from oxidative stress.
Hydrogen has the unique ability to be able to penetrate cell membranes. In an animal study, when rats were given hydrogen-rich water, it seemed to reach their brain, liver, mesentery fat, and kidney at high levels. The liver, in that study, had the highest uptake of hydrogen.
Hydrogen may reduce inflammatory cytokines, linked to chronic conditions like cancer.
Cancer Treatment
There is a lot of exciting research going on to look at the possible benefits of hydrogen gas and water for cancer treatment. This isn’t to say that on its own, researchers think it could be a treatment for cancer, but instead, it could be used adjunctively with traditional treatments.
For example, some researchers believe hydrogen administration could help make cancer cells less resistant to treatment. Treatment resistance is a major reason for cancer deaths.
In a study of people receiving radiation treatment for liver cancer, half the participants drank anywhere from 51 to 68 ounces of hydrogen water a day.
At the end of the study period, the group that took hydrogen water had lower levels of hydroperoxide, which is an oxidative stress marker. They also had more antioxidant activity after radiation treatment than the group that didn’t take hydrogen water.
Other studies have found that hydrogen can regulate ROS, and that can help reduce the negative effects of cancer treatment without reducing the treatment’s effectiveness.
Through the regulation of inflammation and ROS, hydrogen gas has the potential to prevent the formation of tumors, prevent cancer progression and reduce both chemotherapy and radiation side effects.
Quality of Life
In 2017 Japanese researchers found that hydrogen water could be used to improve anxiety, mood, and autonomic nerve function. According to researchers, after four weeks of taking hydrogen-rich water, participants seemed to see noticeable improvements in mood and well-being but this needs to be looked at on a larger scale.
Brain Health
Right now, there are studies looking at the potential benefits of hydrogen-rich water to prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s. Hydrogen can pass the blood-brain barrier, and since it can reduce oxidative stress, it could have benefits on the brain.
A bit of research has also indicated hydrogen therapy can help protect against neurological damage following a stroke. These studies typically look at the inhalation of hydrogen gas versus drinking hydrogen water, but the effects could be similar to one another.
In animal studies, hydrogen-rich water has been shown as beneficial for brain injuries.
Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by hypertension, insulin resistance, and obesity. Oxidative stress is thought to play a key role in the development of metabolic syndrome.
There’s some research-based evidence that drinking hydrogen-rich water could be a possible therapeutic option for metabolic syndrome.
Other Possible Benefits
Some of the other benefits you may see when you regularly drink hydrogen water include:
- Cardiovascular protection
- Improved liver health
- Better skin
- Reduced allergies
- Improvements in diabetes symptoms
- Better athletic performance and recovery
- Weight loss assistance
How Does a Hydrogen Water Bottle Work?
I’m relatively sold on the benefits of hydrogen water based on the information we have available, so I bought two hydrogen water bottles. Each is rechargeable, and I’ll go into more detail about them below.
A hydrogen water bottle works by using electrolysis technology. You press a button, and the water is split into hydrogen and oxygen gas using electrolysis. That then allows the hydrogen gas to infuse into the water, making the hydrogen very bioavailable.
Most hydrogen water bottles use Solid Polymer Electrolyte and Proton Exchange Membrane technology to not only add high concentrations of hydrogen but also remove other gases like chlorine.
You charge most of these bottles with a USB port or a power adapter.
Then, the hydrogen in the water is small and powerful at targeting free radicals, which are neutralized through electrolysis. Hydrogen in water has the unique ability to access the mitochondria within your cells and reduce the inflammation that causes dysfunction.
Why I Love My Hydrogen Water Bottles
As I mentioned, I have not one but two different hydrogen bottles, and I love them both.
The first is a simpler design overall. It’s from the New Pacific Youyah Store on Amazon, and it is a hydrogen water bottle generator that’s glass and features state-of-the-art technology for the best hydrogen retention.
The bottle gets rid of ozone and chlorine residue, so what you’re left with is just pure hydrogen water.
The second I got because it also has the option to use a nasal cannula and breathe in the hydrogen that the bottle creates.
Both you can watch the hydrogen being formed, and the water tastes fresh and crisp with no odor.
I have noticed that in both myself and my husband, we seem to have more energy. I can actually notice a significant increase in my energy levels throughout the day, and they seem to go up the more hydrogen water I have. I have also noticed major improvements in my mood and anxiety. I feel great drinking hydrogen water, and it generally encourages me to drink more water which is always a good thing.
I feel like both my husband and I have experienced skin improvement since we started drinking hydrogen water too.
Again, these are just my experiences, but drinking around 6 to 8 glasses of hydrogen water a day is the only thing that I’m doing differently that I could attribute these benefits to.
- Beautiful, sleek glass design
- Eliminates chlorine and ozone residue
- Uses non-toxic platinum-coated titanium electrode plates so toxic metals aren’t leached into your water
- Runs a 3- or 5-minute cycle
This is the first hydrogen water bottle I bought. It’s really beautifully designed and feels sturdy and substantial in your hands. It’s glass, so you don’t have to worry about the toxins of plastic seeping into your water.
It runs a relatively short three or five-minute cycle, but I always run two cycles to get more hydrogen.
It charges pretty quickly, and the main downside of this hydrogen water bottle compared to the other that I have is the fact that it’s small. It holds probably less than eight ounces of water because you don’t want to overfill it.
Reviews are great for this hydrogen water bottle, and a lot of people seem to have the same experiences as me. For example, customer reviews of the N.P. Hydrogen Water Bottle talk a lot about increased energy levels and also reduced appetite and coffee intake.
I haven’t had to contact them at this point because I haven’t had issues, but users also say the customer service is great with this product.
- Includes self-cleaning mode
- Has an inhaler adapter
- Platinum-coated titanium electrolysis
- Creates high levels of hydrogen concentrate
- Built-in lithium-ion battery
- Includes full one-year warranty
- Expels ozone for pure hydrogen gas dissolving in water
The second hydrogen water bottle I have is from H2WaterForLife. This one is more expensive, but if you have an Amazon store card, you can pay zero interest on it and take advantage of equal monthly payments.
The capacity of this hydrogen water bottle is great. It holds nearly 14 ounces.
I wanted this hydrogen water bottle because of the ability to use the inhaler adapter. You can use the nasal cannulas that come with it and breathe in the hydrogen that’s created in the water bottle. It’s a really unique feature, and I struggle with migraines. I recently had a migraine but it was much less severe than normal and I was able to function, which normally I can’t. I attribute it to a combination of hydrogen water and using the inhalation feature of this bottle.
Final Thoughts
Of all the products I’ve tried recently, both of my hydrogen water bottles are my favorite. I can only speak for my experiences, but I highly recommend them. Again, if nothing else, you’re probably going to drink more water when you have these bottles, but based on currently available research, hydrogen-rich water can have a number of health benefits.
There are other ways to get hydrogen water like the tablets that dissolve in your water or the pre-packaged hydrogen water but in my opinion, a hydrogen water bottle is far superior. You get so much use out of it, and it’s more eco-friendly than buying disposable water packages.
